THE CHANGING PRICE OF SESAME BENI SEED (RIDI) DURING THE BUMFER HARVEST IN NIGERIA, 2015 AT YOBE STATE.
The sesame (Ridi) is a toll annual herbaceous plant of tropical and subtropical areas of the world, cultivated for its oil rich seeds. Sesame is flowering plants in the genus sesamum. Sesame seeds have culinary as well as in traditional medicines for their nutritive, properties flavorful, crunchy sesame seeds are widely considered as healthy foods. Its harvest usually begun about 90 to 150 day after planting some of production exported during the period under review include cocoa, cocoa butter, cocoa cake, ginger sesame seeds. Numerous rainfall late prolongs growth and increases high harvest shattering loses. Nigeria is one of the largest world produces of Sesame banne-seed (ridi) in the Northern part of country like Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa and Adamawa. In Yobe State most of the 17 Local Government are producers of sesame or beni seed (Ridi) which is in largest quantity. Interested buyers use to come
down to villages themselves to inspect the product before buying. The prices of the sesame use to fluctuate from N15,000 to 16,500 in Yobe State, while in Borno State they sold it at N17,000. Buyers came from Lagos, Ibadan, Porthacourt, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and Zamfara and other Countries Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo and South Africa. The seed is marketable which raise the total cost of grain, maize and other food production.
I urge all farmers of the State and the general public to produce the sesame seed because its good to the economic policy of the country, while in my dear State, the sesame is one of the best types of food products that provide revenue to our State. Sesame seed (Ridi) as a rich seed with high nutritional value which can be produce in large quantity. It is a source of revenue in Local markets and also it develops GDP of a country because of its prices. I urge the state government to give adequate support to sesame producers in the 17 local government areas of the Yobe State, because it helps our economic condition in the State and the country at large It is at this junctions I wish to thank the Department of Mass Communication of University of Maiduguri for given me the opportunity to make a write-up on this seed plant.
