We have heard stories about Bombay or Mumbai as it is fondly known but little do we understand the city in itself. Greater Mumbai which comprises of Thane, Palghar, Mumbai, Mumbai suburbs and Raigad has a Population of 20 million + which is greater than the population of Srilanka. If Mumbai were a country it would be the 57th most populated country in the world. If we consider the GDP of Mumbai which is roughly 209 Billion dollars then it would be the 45th richest nation after Bangladesh, Greece and Portugal and many other European and Asian nations as per the international monetary fund. The cultural diversity of Mumbai is probably as great as any European City such as Paris or London with a mix of Indian as well as Expats calling it their Home. Mumbai is truly the commercial capital of the country with The RBI as well as the BSE Sensex both housed here.
As far as Transport network is concerned it has well developed Internal as well as external transport Networks, which comprise of sea, air and land. These result in a well interconnected transportation network which only helps in improving the potential for growth for the city.
Mumbai is the headquarter for Most of the big businesses in India, be it the Tata's or the Ambani's or the Godrej's of this country each may have operating interests spread throughout the country but it is headquartered in Mumbai. This is one of the reasons why the GDP of Mumbai is so high.
Though much of the city's population are Marathas, inhabitants of Maharashtra and speaking the Marathi language, Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city. Its inhabitants include diverse ethnic groups, such as Guajarati's, Marwari's, Sindh is, and people from other Indian states, as well as religious minorities, such as Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. Mumbai is home to the largest community of Parsis (Zoroastrians) in India, as well as a small population of Jews.
When we look at the demographic breakup for the city that also provides an interesting insight, the demographic is widely distributed across all sections, be it technology enthusiasts or quality service seekers this city provides it all. Just look at the type of restaurants this city has from the most exquisite cuisines across the world to the regular daal chawal this city has it all. Even the demographic in the SEC-A group or the affluent group is widely varied; there are business class individuals who have made their money through smart investments in business although they may not be so highly educated, this city also has technocrats, diplomats, expats, bureaucrats, managerial staffs etc. This makes understanding the customer psychology much easier and identifying who will be your final customer. Especially if one is entering into a business that is providing niche services.
This is probably the reason why Mumbai is the best city to start any new business to test the waters as it is city that has both Business Men as well as professionals, It is a city that has Ultra HNI's, HNI's as well as the middle and lower class, any service targeted to that specific segment of the society can be first tested much easily in Mumbai than any other city and this is why the startups in the same spaces are competing heavily for a slice of pie in Mumbai. Especially is the service is targeting the UHNI's and Expats as the density of this category of individuals is higher in Mumbai than in any part of the country.
Thus Saaarthi a start-up targeting the Niche of UHNI's has started it's operations in mumbai providing Personal Car driver hiring service, Home tutor Service.
