Buhari's anti corruption crusade: where Dr Gumi got it wrong

BUHARI'S ANTI-CORRUPTION CRUSADE: WHERE DR GUMI GOT IT WRONG

The holy prophet of Islam Muhammad (SAW) says Islamic scholars are heirs to the prophets, meaning it is expected that the ulamas would detach themselves from sentiments when it comes to judging others or abhor worldly material at the expense of justice. The political landscape in Nigeria today has been bedeviled by religious, tribal and sectional considerations making religious leaders trying to overtake and usurp the power to comment on political issues from the political class as was witnessed  from the Kaduna based Islamic scholar Sheikh Dr Ahmed Gumi on his negative disposition against the candidature of Buhari during the 2015npresidential race. Dr Gumi's comments against the Katsina state born retired General who command respect not only in Nigeria but from the international community. Those following the trend of events in the country may recall that Dr Gumi had claimed to have intervened and broker peace between Major Hamza Al-Mustapha and an Islamic scholar Sheikh Khalid when the former accused the later of allegedly being used by former President Jonathan to destabilize the peace in northern Nigeria to pave  way for his political ambition of ruling the country for the third term which his predecessor Obasanjo tried and failed.

Imaging someone from late Gumi's blood condemning war against corruption, am sure if Baba was to be alive and heard about this, he would have parted tent with him and ask for his brain to be tested to determine his mental state of health.

Let me say without fear of contradiction that the decision to select Dr Gumi as the preacher for Sultan Bello mosque in Kaduna was informed by the need to uphold the respect  the muslim community in Kaduna have for the late Sheikh Gumi, otherwise Dr Gumi was not in any standard better educated or knowledgeable than any of the contenders. Dr Gumi should note that the fight against corruption is a religious obligation in both islam and Christian religions as such anybody no matter his social or religious status who castigates Buhari's  anti- corruption crusade is doing a great disservice to his religion and country. As if Dr Gumi was not in Nigeria when the nation's treasury was looted by a few disgruntled elements in the name of fighting Boko Haram, as if Dr Gumi has not been watching TV to see items recovered from such people, as if Gumi was not in Nigeria when Boko Haram were killing people with guns and suicide bombings in mosques and churches.
